Navigating music licensing can be tricky. Use this guide to ensure your release is submitted correctly and avoids copyright issues.
What is a Cover Song?
A cover song is a brand-new recording of a previously released song created by a different artist.
To qualify as a cover song, your track must keep three core elements identical to the original:
- Lyrics - Lyrics must be word-for-word with no alterations or translations
- Melody – The primary musical line must match the original. Note: If you are releasing an instrumental cover of a vocal track, the original vocal melody must still be present and played by an instrument.
- Song Structure - The original order of verses, choruses, and bridges must remain
If your recording stays faithful to all three, it is a cover song.
What is a Derivative Work?
If your version alters, adds to, or transforms any of the core elements of the original track, it is legally classified as a Derivative Work.
Important: LANDR cannot obtain licenses for derivative works. Derivative works require explicit permission or a custom direct license from the original copyright holder before distribution.
Common Examples of Derivative Works
Your release will be categorized as a Derivative Work if it includes any of the following:
- Modified Lyrics: Adding, removing, or altering words from the original composition.
- Translations: Translating original lyrics into a different language.
- Rearranged Structure: Changing the song’s layout (e.g., swapping Verse 1 and Verse 2, or removing a bridge).
- Sampled Audio: Using actual sound recordings from the original track without clearance.
- Creating a Parody: Rewriting lyrics or intent to mock or comment on the original work.
- Combining Tracks: Merging two or more existing songs into a medley or mashup.
