The difference comes down to the number of tracks and the total run time. Stores use these guidelines to categorize your release correctly, so it’s important to format it properly.
Single
- Contains 1–3 tracks, each under 10 minutes in length
- Total run time is typically short
- Do not add “– Single” to your track or release title — stores will do this automatically if needed
EP (extended play)
An EP falls into one of two categories:
- 1–3 tracks with one track at least 10 minutes long, and a total run time of 30 minutes or less
- 4–6 tracks with a total run time of 30 minutes or less
Album
- Contains 6 or more tracks
- Total run time exceeds 30 minutes
- Considered a full-length product by stores and platforms
Understanding these classifications helps ensure your release is properly displayed and categorized across streaming services.
